Cwmdu campsite is nestled within the stunning Brecon Beacons and Black Mountain range and hence, is a perfect spot for keen walkers!
The Brecon Beacons is a prime walking destination for people across the United Kingdom. Founded in 1957, The Brecon Beacons National Park Authority are extremely supportive of these peaceful activities both behind the scenes and directly via the excellent warden service. The network of public footpaths is exemplary, and throughout the Park, there is an ongoing programme of maintenance involving conservation, restoration, and waymarking.
Traditionally, it has been the higher peaks that have attracted the majority of visitors, but in recent years,a network of rural paths created at lower altitudes have generated a range of options, depending upon the weather, time available, experience, and fitness of the visitor.
Small communities such as Bwlch have pooled their local expertise and with the guidance of National Park officers, have produced three notable leaflets outlining excellent walks in the locality. “Bwlch With Fortitude” is a 7.5 mile circular walk starting directly from Cwmdu Campsite, and the Beacons Way Path is located just a kilometre away.
Our campsite shop also has maps with detailed routes of surrounding walks, starting from the campsite, varying in length and difficulty, which are available to lend out!
A short Drive away
Once you have explored the walks directly from the campsite there are numerous walks only a short drive away. Some of the most popular are:
- Llangattock Quarries – A beautiful walk along the old quarry tramways and into the Craig y Cilau National Nature Reserve. Stunning views of the Black Mountains.
- Crickhowell to Table Mountain – Table Mountain or Crug Hywel in Welsh gives Crickhowell its name, its hill fort dominates the town despite its modest height. This hill walk offers stunning views of Crickhowell, the Usk Valley, the Black Mountains and the Central Beacons.
- A stroll along the Mon and Brecon Canal from Llangattock. A gentle walk offering views of the Usk Valley, the Black Mountains and Llangattock hillside
- Pen y Fan Horseshoe Ridge Walk – This challenging hike takes in four of the central Beacons summits.
Walkers are Welcome
Crickhowell has gone one step further and attained the status of “Walkers Are Welcome”, a clear indicator that this gateway to the National Park is geared up with all the information, a keen walker could wish. In the Tourist Information Centre, well-advertised accommodation and friendly shops are well accustomed to the activity. Crickhowell, again, has produced an excellent booklet outlining some cracking walks radiating in all directions from the town itself.
Other towns like Hay and Talgarth have also followed suit. Numerous walking books have appeared in recent years.

- Efail Isaf – ‘Old Smithy’ – Sleeps 6 in three bedrooms. Cosy cottage with log burner and picturesque garden and panoramic views of the National Park. Infant facilities are available.
- Efail Bach – ‘Little Smithy’ – One-bed cottage with large shower and separate large bath. Fantastic views from the bedroom, living room and garden. BBQ included. Infant facilities are available.
