Hay-on-Wye

Another location to visit in the surrounding area of Cwmdu campsite! The well-known historic market town of Hay-on-Wye offers a scenic day out in a quirky town filled with cafes, lunch and brunch, bookstores galore, and ample walking opportunities. A day out for all ages!

LOCATION

Hay-on-Wye is located 12 miles from Cwmdu campsite, situated within the Brecon Beacons National Park. Hay-on-Wye is an idyllic location with multiple outdoor adventurous activities, scenic walking routes, and great spots for food and drink!

Driving: Hay-on-Wye is a 27-minute drive from Cwmdu campsite. It has a large public car park in the center alongside ample parking around the outskirts of the town.

Public Transport: You can catch the X43 bus to Brecon from Crickhowell or Bwlch. Once in Brecon, you will need to change and get onto the T14 bus to Hereford. The T14 bus stops in Hay-on-Wye town opposite the castle. All bus routes and times can be located here! 

Cycling & Walking: Unfortunately it would be too far to walk to Hay-on-Wye. However, along the way, you can find the ‘dragon’s back’, walking route in Pengenfford just before you enter Talgarth. One of the many walking opportunities situated in the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountain range.

ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITES

Wye Valley Canoes:  Enjoy a half or full-day trip canoeing along the River Wye. From Glasbury, you can canoe to Hay-on-Wye and you can extend this to canoe on towards Whitney. All details can be found here!

Bookshops: Hay-on-Wye is home to the Hay Festival, an annual festival of literature and arts. Hay-on-Wye is known for its literary connection and hence you can find bookshops scattered throughout the town! Richard Booth’s bookshop is a favourite among the Hay community, its three-story set-up will have you browsing for hours!

Walking Routes: Hay-on-Wye is a perfect spot for surrounding walks. the town of Hay-on-Wye itself is a lovely town to wander around and browse through the vast array of shops dotted around! You can walk along the River Wye

EAT & DRINK

Hay offers an array of eating and drinking opportunities! Hay is filled with pubs, cafes, restaurants, and bars.

The Blue Boar: A cosy, family-owned pub with an open fireplace, a great selection of ales, and delicious pub food in a characterful pub!

The Three Tuns:  A 16th-century Pub and Restaurant is reputed to be the oldest surviving house in the town and in recognition of its importance has a Grade II listing. The pub welcomes loyal locals, along with visitors from further afield, serving a selection of local beers, cask ales, and great wines by the glass.

Tomatitos Tapas Bar:  This is absolutely delicious! Their food is made from the best ingredients sourced locally from the wonderful profusion of growers and makers on the Welsh borders, from artisan bread to the best seasonal veg. Eat and drink as much or as little as you fancy!

Oscars Bistro:  A lovely cafe, open all day, on the high street of Hay. They have an extensive breakfast menu served until 11.30 am is also always popular. For something lighter, they also serve fresh homemade soup, salads, quiche, jacket potatoes, paninis, and baguettes with a range of fillings.
