What Wildlife Can You See Around Cwmdu Campsite?
Here’s a guide to some of the fascinating animals and birds you’re likely to spot in the area—and some tips on when and where to find them.
1️⃣ Red Kites & Buzzards
Where: Overhead or circling fields near the campsite
When: All year round
How to Spot: Look up! These birds of prey are easily recognised by their graceful flight and distinctive forked tails.
The Red Kite is one of Wales’ greatest conservation success stories. Once endangered, they now soar above the Black Mountains in large numbers. Buzzards are also common—often seen perched on fence posts or gliding in lazy circles on warm air currents.
Tip: Bring binoculars and settle near an open field just before dusk—you’ll often see several birds riding the thermals.
2️⃣ Badgers & Foxes
Where: Woodland edges and quiet hedgerows
When: At dusk and dawn
How to Spot: Look for rustling in undergrowth or snuffling sounds.
While they’re shy and mostly nocturnal, badgers and foxes are regular visitors to areas around Cwmdu. You might even spot signs of their presence—tracks, snuffle holes, or well-worn paths along hedge lines.
Tip: Sit quietly near the woodland edge after sunset—you might just get lucky.
3️⃣ Pipistrelle Bats
Where: Around trees and open grassy areas
When: Just after sunset
How to Spot: Watch for tiny flitting shadows against the evening sky.
As night falls over the campsite, watch for Pipistrelle bats darting through the trees. These tiny insect-eaters are common and utterly captivating to watch.
Fun fact: A single pipistrelle bat can eat up to 3,000 insects in one night!
4️⃣ Otters & Herons Along the River Usk
Where: River Usk, near Crickhowell
When: Early morning or late evening
How to Spot: Look for ripples in the water and listen for the splash of fish.
Just a short drive or cycle from Cwmdu Campsite, the River Usk offers fantastic opportunities for wildlife watching. Herons stand silently at the water’s edge, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of an otter slipping through the shallows.
Tip: Walk quietly along the riverbanks at dawn for the best chance of spotting elusive species.
5️⃣ Fallow & Red Deer
Where: Woodland areas and open hillsides
When: Early morning or dusk
How to Spot: Look for movement on open slopes or listen for rustling and calls.
While more difficult to spot, deer do roam the Black Mountains. In autumn, the rutting season brings dramatic sights and sounds as stags clash antlers.
Note: Use binoculars and remain downwind—you’re more likely to see them from a distance.

4* Dog-Friendly Holiday Cottages in the Brecon Beacons, 4 miles from Crickhowell and within 50 yards of Cwmdu Campsite.
We have 4 cosy cottages available to book:
- Efail Isaf – ‘Old Smithy’ – Sleeps 6 in three bedrooms. Cosy cottage with log burner and picturesque garden and panoramic views of the National Park. Infant facilities are available.
- Efail Bach – ‘Little Smithy’ – One-bed cottage with large shower and separate large bath. Fantastic views from the bedroom, living room and garden. BBQ included. Infant facilities are available.
- The Hay Loft – Newly refurbished couples retreat. Peaceful, scenic views, private garden.
- Ty Ffynon – Beautifully decorated, two-bedroom house with wonderful views, log burner and free-standing bath in the main bedroom.

Imagine a Fire & Ice experience like no other! Rest and Rejuvenate peacefully in a Nordic wood-fired Sauna & Ice Baths with a Scenic mountain view looking out across the Welsh Brecon Beacons National Park also known as (Bannau Brycheiniog).
Guests can visit in many ways, camp at Cwmdu Campsite, Glamp in either a log pod or shepherd’s hut, stay in one of our four Holiday Cottages, or stop by for an independent session. Guests are guided through a series of hot and cold transitions between the Sauna and Ice Bath.
This may just be the perfect place to relax, unwind, improve your mental and physical health or recover from a long walk all while listening to the beautiful birdsong of the area.
