The weather is getting warmer, and those river days are definitely in sight. Wales has a wide range of options when it comes to enjoying being near the water, from rivers and lakes to waterfalls. Take a look at our local wild swimming spots to plan your day!
River Swims
The river Usk runs through the valley from Brecon to Abergavenny (the two towns, equidistant on either side of Cwmdu Campsite)
Llangynidr: The river here is great for paddling and swimming. It is also very safe, during the summer as the current isn’t too strong. The best way to access the river is opposite the village shop (The Walnut Tree Store). If you pop into the shop, there will also be someone there to point you in the right direction. There is a path, all the way along the river in Llangyndir, so you can pick your spot and swim pretty much anywhere!
Brecon: The best way to access Brecon River is just off the canal, near the turning to Llanfrynach, on your way into Brecon. The river here is less rocky and ideal for more gentle swims. Brecon is a 20-minute drive away, offering a stunning cathedral, canal walks, and plenty of options for coffee breaks.
Crickhowell: Crickhowell is a popular place to swim, as there are lots of swimming spots along the river. The best way to access the river is by the Crickhowell Bridge, at the bottom of the town. Crickhowell high school has free parking at weekends. There is also a large pay and display car park behind the tourist information centre. Alternatively, you can walk to Crickhowell from Cwmdu campsite and swim along the way!
Waterfall Swims

Blaen Y Glyn Isaf:Â This is the name of the car park that has access to several waterfalls and wild swimming spots. Search this car park on maps, and you can head there for a swim and explore! The nearby village of Talybont-on-Usk is worth a visit whilst you are in the area.
Four Falls Trail:Â This is about a 40-minute drive from us, but a great day out in the Brecon Beacons! There are two car parks – Cwm Porth and Gwaun Hepste, both based on the four waterfalls trail. There is a daily charge for these car parks, and wardens are generally on site to answer any questions that you may have.
When swimming at any of the waterfall trails, we would strongly recommend only swimming in the pools below the falls and not in the rivers feeding the waterfalls. Please do not jump in from the top of the falls and follow the warden’s advice regarding weather conditions, river flow etc.
Lake Swims

Llyn Cwm Llwch: Here you can swim under Pen Y Fan! Just a 25-minute drive away, and here you can park your car and take a 30-minute walk to the most beautiful spot! This lake is a glacial lake, so never the warmest swim, but definitely a very special spot to experience a truly wild swim.

Keepers Pond: Also known as Pen-ffordd-goch Pond, this lake is situated high up on the hill above Blaenavon. The pond is the starting point for a number of spectacular walks and offers stunning views across the mountains. The car park for Keepers Pond is right next to the lake, so this is a good choice if you are looking for a wild swimming with easy access.Â
Before you go wild swimming, we would recommend that you assess the area thoroughly. Check the water’s depth for hidden rocks, analyse the flow rate, and be mindful of the water temperature to guard against cold shock. Always heed local safety signs, showcasing potential dangers and off-limits zones. Equip yourself with suitable swim gear, such as life jackets, especially if you’re not a strong swimmer. Never swim alone; adopting the buddy system enhances both safety and enjoyment. Remain cautious of strong water currents; avoid swimming against them. Never jump from a height into unknown waters. Most importantly, keep an eye on the weather, as conditions can change rapidly. All wild swimming is done at the individual’s own risk.
