Tretower Court and Castle is a two-in-one architectural wonder spanning 900 years of history and was so striking that it became known as Tretower – ‘the place of the tower’. Just across from the castle green lies one of the finest Medieval mansions in Wales, just a 5-minute drive or 20-minute walk from the campsite!

Tretower’s History
The castle was built by Roger Picard II and for 200 years the Picards developed from invading Norman adventurers into powerful Welsh lords. Tretower Court was the creation of Sir Robert Vaughan and his descendants. Sir Roger became one of the most powerful men in Wales therefore, Tretower Court reflects this fame. Tretower was especially popular with medieval Welsh poets who enjoyed its hospitality and fine wines frequently.
Visiting Tretower today
Visitors can see how the medieval court would have originally looked as the rooms have been restored to look as they did in the 1460s complete with tapestries and ornaments; the great hall is set out for a magnificent banquet and in the 15th century recreated garden you can wander among the fragrant roses that symbolise Sir Roger Vaughan’s Yorkist sympathies.
Planning your visit
Tretower Castle and Court welcomes dogs on leads on the ground floor levels of the site. There is a free car park opposite the court where you will also find a gift shop. Additionally, there is bike storage, accessible toilets, an audio guide, and picnic areas, the site also offers school trips.
Refreshments
Y Bwyty Bach restaurant is located on the upper floor of a renovated Grade II listed barn, the restaurant opens seasonally and offers a delicious lunch time menu of hot and cold seasonal treats.

4* Dog-Friendly Holiday Cottages in the Brecon Beacons located 4 miles from Crickhowell and all within 50 yards of Cwmdu Campsite.
We have 4 cosy cottages available to book:
- Efail Isaf – ‘Old Smithy’ – Sleeps 6 in three bedrooms. Cosy cottage with log burner and picturesque garden and panoramic views of the National Park. Infant facilities are available.
- Efail Bach – ‘Little Smithy’ – One-bed cottage with large shower and separate large bath. Fantastic views from the bedroom, living room and garden. BBQ included. Infant facilities are available.
- The Hay Loft – Newly refurbished couples retreat. Peaceful, scenic views, private garden.
- Ty Ffynon – Beautifully decorated, two-bedroom house with wonderful views, log burner and free-standing bath in the main bedroom.

FIRE AND ICE INFORMATION
Imagine a Fire & Ice experience like no other! Rest and Rejuvenate peacefully in a Nordic wood-fired Sauna & Ice Baths with a Scenic mountain view looking out across the Welsh Brecon Beacons National Park also known as (Bannau Brycheiniog).
Guests can visit in many ways, camp at Cwmdu Campsite, Glamp in either a log pod or shepherd’s hut, stay in one of our four Holiday Cottages, or stop by for an independent session. Guests are guided through a series of hot and cold transitions between the Sauna and Ice Bath.
This may just be the perfect place to relax, unwind, improve your mental and physical health or recover from a long walk all while listening to the beautiful birdsong of the area.
