The Geology of the Brecon Beacons

The Geology of the Brecon Beacons: Uncovering the Story Beneath Your Boots

When you stand atop one of the rugged ridges of the Black Mountains, gazing out across the Brecon Beacons, you’re not just looking at beautiful scenery — you’re standing on hundreds of millions of years of history. From ancient seas to Ice Age glaciers, the geology of the Brecon Beacons has shaped more than just the land. It’s influenced the region’s wildlife, farming, building styles, and even the location of sites like Cwmdu Campsite itself.

In this post, we’ll take a closer look at the rocky roots of Wales’ most breathtaking landscapes, and how you can explore them during your stay at Cwmdu Campsite, perfectly nestled within these ancient hills.

️ A Landscape Carved by Time

The Black Mountains and wider Brecon Beacons National Park sit upon some of the oldest rock formations in Wales. Much of the landscape is made up of Old Red Sandstone, laid down over 400 million years ago during the Devonian period, when this part of the world was a dry, semi-arid desert near the equator. Over time, shifting continents and powerful geological forces created the uplifted ridges and deep valleys we see today.

Did you know? The red hue in the sandstone comes from iron oxide—essentially rust—created in the hot, dry climate of the ancient supercontinent Pangaea.

❄️ Ice, Water & Erosion: The Making of the Mountains

Fast-forward to the Ice Age, and this once-flat terrain was dramatically reshaped by glacial action. Massive ice sheets scoured the land, carving out U-shaped valleys, depositing glacial till, and leaving behind sharp ridges and escarpments. Many of the rivers, streams, and lakes you’ll walk by near Cwmdu were created by retreating glaciers, making this area a geological goldmine for hikers and nature lovers.

One striking example is the Grwyne Fawr Valley, just a short hike from Cwmdu Campsite. It features a classic glacial valley profile with scree slopes, jagged outcrops, and a reservoir tucked into the head of the valley—a must-see for geology buffs and photographers alike.
