Stargazing in the Black Mountains – A Night Under the Welsh Sky
Escape the city lights and look up—some of the UK’s clearest, darkest skies are right above you at Cwmdu Campsite. Whether you’re an amateur astronomer or love a sky full of stars, the Black Mountains are a designated Dark Sky zone, offering unforgettable stargazing experiences.
✨ Why the Black Mountains Are Perfect for Stargazing
-
Minimal light pollution
-
Elevated views for clear horizons
-
Quiet, remote atmosphere for peaceful observation
Did you know? On a clear night, you can see the Milky Way, constellations like Orion, and even meteor showers like the Perseids in August.
Stargazing Tips for Campers
-
Check the Moon Phase – New moon nights are best.
-
Bring Binoculars or a Telescope – Even a basic set reveals craters on the moon or Saturn’s rings.
-
Use an App – Tools like Sky Map or Night Sky help you identify stars and planets.
-
Wrap Up Warm – Even in summer, it gets cold after sunset.
Local Spot: Just above Cwmdu Campsite, there are open fields with unobstructed 360° views—perfect for night sky photography too.
Campfire + Cosmos
Nothing beats a campfire under a sky full of stars. Cwmdu Campsite allows firepits, so you can toast marshmallows while watching for shooting stars. It’s one of the most magical experiences you can have in Wales.
