Photography Tips – Capturing the Beauty of the Brecon Beacons
Love photography? Camping in the Brecon Beacons offers some of the most photogenic landscapes in the UK. From golden sunrises over the Black Mountains to misty valleys and starry skies, there are endless opportunities to snap your next masterpiece. Whether you’re using a smartphone or a DSLR, here are some top photography tips to help you make the most of your stay at Cwmdu Campsite.
1. Golden Hour is Your Best Friend
The hour after sunrise and before sunset is known as the golden hour for a reason. The soft, warm light casts dramatic shadows and enhances the landscape, making everything from rolling hills to tents look magical.
Local tip: Head up to Table Mountain (a short drive or hike from Cwmdu) for stunning golden hour views over Crickhowell and the Usk Valley.
2. Try Some Stargazing Shots
Thanks to the low light pollution in the Black Mountains, Cwmdu Campsite is a dream for astrophotographers. You’ll often see the Milky Way on clear nights and, in spring and autumn, the occasional meteor shower.
Use a tripod, set a long exposure (10–30 seconds), and point your camera toward the darkest part of the sky. Apps like Sky Guide or Stellarium can help you find constellations.
3. Capture the Layers of the Landscape
From the folded ridges of the Black Mountains to lush green valleys below, the Beacons are all about layers. Use a wide-angle lens or phone panorama mode to capture this depth.
Try this spot: The path between Llangenny and Cwmdu offers a lovely walk with great photo ops of layered hills and quiet rural scenes.
4. Look for the Small Details
Don’t just point your lens at the horizon. The Brecon Beacons are full of intricate textures—ferns, mossy stone walls, lichen-covered trees, wildflowers, and stream reflections.
Challenge: Capture 5 unique nature close-ups in one day. It’s a fun way to slow down and appreciate the micro beauty around your pitch.
5. Tell a Story Through Your Photos
Document your camping experience like a story—setting up your tent, cooking a meal, hiking, then relaxing by the fire. These everyday moments capture the spirit of your adventure.
