Why Autumn is the Best Time to Go Camping in the UK – Especially in the Brecon Beacons
As the days grow shorter and the countryside explodes into fiery hues of red, orange, and gold, there’s no better season to unplug and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the United Kingdom. Autumn camping brings a special kind of magic — one that’s quieter, cosier, and irresistibly charming.
At Cwmdu Campsite, nestled in the stunning Black Mountains just outside of Crickhowell, we believe autumn is the most underrated season for outdoor adventures. Here’s why pitching your tent in the fall is a must for every nature lover, whether you’re a seasoned camper or a curious first-timer.
1. A Kaleidoscope of Colour
Autumn in the UK transforms landscapes into living paintings. Imagine waking up at Cwmdu Campsite to golden sunbeams filtering through crimson treetops, or hiking through leaf-littered trails in the Brecon Beacons National Park. It’s a photographer’s dream — and a peaceful escape from digital overload.
Pro tip: The wooded valleys around our campsite offer some of the best leaf-peeping views in Wales!
2. Peaceful, Crowd-Free Campsites
The hustle and bustle of summer has passed, and a tranquil atmosphere settles over UK campsites. At Cwmdu, you’ll enjoy wide-open spaces, quieter trails, and that priceless feeling of having the landscape all to yourself. Whether you’re in a campervan, tent, or trying one of our nearby glamping options, autumn is the perfect time to unwind.
3. ️ Perfect Weather for Outdoor Adventures
Cooler days and crisp evenings make for ideal hiking, cycling, and stargazing conditions. You won’t be overheating on a walk through the hills or battling midges around the campfire. Just layer up for the evenings and bring a warm sleeping bag — we promise, it’s worth it.
4. ✨ Stargazing Like Never Before
As the nights draw in earlier, you’ll be treated to dazzling star-filled skies. Cwmdu Campsite is far from light pollution, making it a perfect spot for spotting constellations, shooting stars, and even the occasional planet. Bring a blanket, a thermos of hot chocolate, and enjoy the celestial show.
5. Fireside Feasts & Foraged Treats
Autumn is harvest season — and what better way to celebrate than with campfire cooking? Think hearty stews, roasted marshmallows, and foraged blackberries from local hedgerows. Stop by a nearby farmers’ market for fresh seasonal produce, or ask us at the campsite about local foraging tips!
6. Wildlife at Its Most Active
Autumn is a golden window for wildlife watching in the UK. Red deer rutting in nearby valleys, squirrels busy gathering nuts, and birds on their migratory paths — there’s something new to spot each day. Keep your binoculars handy, especially during a morning stroll through Cwmdu’s peaceful trails.
7. Leaf-Strewn Hikes in the Brecon Beacons
Fewer crowds mean more space to explore some of the UK’s best walking routes. From the majestic ridges of Pen y Fan to the charming footpaths around Crickhowell, autumn hiking here is unbeatable. And yes, collecting fallen leaves and turning them into artwork is fully encouraged — especially if you’ve got little ones in tow!
8. The Joy of a Cozy Campfire
There’s something undeniably magical about gathering around a crackling fire on a chilly evening. Toast marshmallows, tell stories, or simply sit in silence as the flames flicker. At Cwmdu, our fire pits are a guest favourite — especially in autumn.
9. Halloween Vibes & Spooky Stories
There’s no better time to tell ghost stories under the stars. The woods take on a mystical quality in the fall, and if you’re camping over Halloween, why not bring along some costumes and treats? Campfire tales of local legends around the Brecon Beacons will give your trip a fun (and slightly spooky) twist.
10. Local Harvest Festivals & Events
Autumn in Wales and across the UK is packed with charming local events. From village harvest festivals to artisan food markets, you’ll find plenty of ways to mix with the locals and sample regional delicacies. Crickhowell and nearby towns often host events that are worth checking out — ask us what’s on during your stay!
