Cwmdu, meaning “Black Valley” in Welsh, lies in the Rhiangoll valley at the foot of the Black Mountains. In the early 19th century, Cwmdu was home to one of the foremost scholars of Celtic history, music and literature. The church of St Michael Archangel, The Farmers Arms pub and the beautiful Paramour Orchard are all lovely places to visit whilst enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Rhingoll valley.
Paramor Orchard
Just outside of the main village of Cwmdu you will find Paramor Orchard, which boasts a remarkable collection of over 300 heritage apple trees, many of which were thought to be lost, and some varieties that cannot be found anywhere else in the UK. The orchard is managed by the Marcher Apple Network, which is determined to protect traditional orchards and reverse decades of decline. This orchard boasts a remarkable collection of heritage apple varieties, each with its own unique history and flavour. The orchard is only a 15 minute walk from Cwmdu campsite and is a lovely place to explore. There are also benches where you can sit and take in the beautiful view.

The Church of St Michael Archangel
In the heart of Cwmdu village is the church of St Michael Archangel. A grade II listed building, the church was first consecrated on this site in 1060. The oldest part of the current building is the tower, which is early 15th century. Alongside regular services, the church hosts a number of musical events throughout the year, organised by a charitable trust, Friends of Cwmdu Music. These events are always popular due to the building’s excellent acoustics.
