Local Activities
People come to us to enjoy the outstanding scenery and savour the peace and relaxation of the National Park. Beyond the visual and psychological aspects there are so many activities to consider.
In Cwmdu we are exceptionally well positioned for exploring both the mountain masses of The Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains.
Walking
A visit to South Wales would not be complete without a ramble in the Brecon Beacons. You can strole gently to the highest peak in southern Britain, Pen y Fan, in less than 2 hours. From Storey Arms, the highest point on the A470 trunk road, there is a substantial footpath which gives a gradual ascent; there are altogether more energetic paths from the north side of the mountains. These are the highest mountains in southern Britain with spectacular views in all directions.
The Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal lies just a few miles away which, with its well maintained towpath, is ideal for a more leisurely walk. There are so many options here but our favourite is that in and around Llangynidr where you can plan a couple of really interesting circular walks combining the canal with the most scenic section of the River Usk. There are a couple of exceptional pubs here and The Red Lion, in Llangynidr, is thoroughly recommended. Information and tips on longer walks can be supplied by campsite reception and certainly there are any number of trails dating back to the early days of the Industrial Revolution that will intrigue all the family.
Mountain Bikes
Mountain bikes are available for hire in Cwmdu Village - Tel: 01874 730289. Pre booking may be advisable. There are so many tracks, paths, lanes and areas of open countryside to explore but please remember the country code at all times. Bikes & Hikes, in Brecon, Tel: 01874 610071 are also well worth considering.
Canoeing
Canoeing can be undertaken safely on the canal, but you can hire your own Canadian canoe at Glasbury on Wye (20 - 25 minute drive) and if so inclined paddle down the river to the small town of Hay. This makes an exceptional afternoon adventure in summer. For pure unadulterated relaxation you might wish to drive to Symonds Yat, further down the Wye valley (35 minutes) and take a leisurely motorised boat ride along the river.
Outdoor Pursuits
Have you ever been climbing, abseiling, caving or gorge walking? Why not go with qualified local instructors for a great day out. Black Mountain Activities, at Glasbury on Wye, are an outdoor pursuits centre, catering for individuals, families and groups, curious novices or those with experience.
